Subfolder and thread links update?

I'm thinking of adding a front page to my site and move the forum to a subfolder to keep things clean.
However, I have several sites currently linking to threads on my forum.
So, if I move the forum to the subfolder, will users following the links from other sites have the links redirected to the subfolder? If not, how is it possible t make this happen?
