A newly registered user (after activation) goes into the "Registered Users" usergroup - so make sure that usergroup has the default username markup you want.

What usergroup do they automatically get put into when they register? Is it usergroup id 2? Or do they go to usergroup id 3 first? And do both those usergroups have the correct Username HTML Markup that you want?

Usergroupid 3 is your Awaiting Email Confirmation usergroup, not a custom sponsered usergroup.

If I were you, I would not touch any of the default vbulletin groups since they are hard coded. I would have created a promotion to move them from the Registered Usergroup to the Sponsored group (a new group you should create).

Correct, so you need to create a new group "Sponsors"

Then, when a REGISTERED USER pays for a subscription, you ADD A SECONDARY usergroup! the secondary group should have the "extra" perks that the user gets for being in the group. This way, when their subscription period expires, they can lose their secondary group and still have access as the normal Registered Users.

You can create secondary groups for private clubs with special forums.
You can create secondary groups for contributors with special rights (avatars, more PMs, etc).
You can create secondary groups with special recognition.

But really, use a NEW secondary group to make it easier on yourself!
