Can anyone tell me how to remove some of the items in notification list?

Below are the items shown in notification list and I want to remove some of them:

Unread Private Messages
Incoming Friend Requests
Requests to Join Your Social Groups
Invitations to Join Social Groups
Unread Picture Comments
Picture Comments Awaiting Approval
Group Messages Awaiting Approval

Also, I want to add some items on the list.

Any help?

Have a look at the notifications_list hook in global.php (line 767).
