Well now i can't access forums with posts in them i get a 404 error

actually your site is dead, all the files are deleted...

Your not suppose to upload the upload folder its self but the files within start the root directory

Your index.php or index.html file is corrupt

Check if you have a index.html in your forum directory, if there is one present rename it or delete it.
