Does anyone know how to display the user left of the post / thread instead of on top of the post / thread ? Is this a template mod ?

No it isn`t, it`s a control panel options that you have to change. Go to admin cp ---> vbulletin options --> vbulletin options ---> Style & Language Settings --->
Use Legacy (Vertical) Postbit Template ---> set "YES".
