Did you trying setting vboptions > Forums Home Page Options > Display Logged in Users? to No?

^ yes it's set to No, i want it to display number of users online without displaying the usernames.

You might have to hard edit the code in the templates to do that.

Yep. You can remove this line "<div>$activeusers</div>" If server performance is really important, then you may remove the code to create that variable in the index.php page.
