Is anyone out there using geo-targeted advertising on their sites? I am considering adding such a system and am curious how other people have implemented it. I want to set up the geo-targeted ads as a text-based rotation, separate from my banner ad rotation. I envision something that looks a bit like a Google AdSense block. Each text ad will have three or four lines of content, including a company name, location info, maybe phone number/URL/email address and a teaser line. I want the system to be usable to a company whether or not they have a website. If they have a site, the ad will link to it. Otherwise, it will link to a subsequent page with expanded information and contact info on the company. I want the ad creation, payment and updates to be an automatic process.
I will probably use MaxMind for the geo-targeting database. This will give me the ability to target ads by city/state or even zip code with better than 80% accuracy. I am now trying to find a text-based ad program that will get me as close to the outlined goals above as possible. I have found a couple that are not bad, but I don't think I have found a winner yet. I could use OpenAds which already has text ads and the ability to do geo-targeting, but it will have to be modified quite a bit to meet my goals. does anyone have any ideas of other text ad systems that might meet my criteria more closely?
I want to accomplish two things with this system: I want to be able to provide a service that would appeal to smaller companies and companies who would only benefit from highly localized ad presence. I also want a system that will be of use to companies that do not have websites. I am not sure how many genres of sites this sort of advertising would be useful for, but I believe it could open up a huge untapped market for my site.
What do you folks think of the concept? Any advice on the concept, setup and implementation of such a system would be appreciated. I would be happy to share the results of my efforts as well. Eric

I am currently using OpenAds to run some geo-targeted banner ads via the free Maxmind database and have had zero hangups with it.
What about OpenAds do anticipate needing to modify to get the functionality you desire?
Well, I am going to have to add some extra fields, including fields for contact info, teaser line, expanded text, etc. I'll need the modify the system to click through to a dynamically generated page which displays info on the advertiser, if they do not have a website. There are some required fields that will have to be modified. It will take a bit of work.
Also, there are some pretty serious issues with the current version of OpenAds. I just had to downgrade to the 2.0.11 version of the software. The current version was putting an incredible load on my server and the database size was growing without control. When I finally downgraded, the database had grown from around 310MB to over 4GB in size, in a matter of three weeks. There are plenty of people talking about these problems on their site, but they haven't done anything about it in weeks. Until I know that they have resolved these issues, I won't use the current version of the software, so I won't have access to the new geo-targeting feature. Eric

I believe the latest released version addressed that issue. They are aware of it and I think have patched it recently. I'll try and find a link in a second.
I was running 2.4.3 and it had all the problems I described above. If you do some searching on their site, you will find plenty of others running the same version and having the same problems. Eric

Hmm, that stinks. Luckily I have plenty of room an processing power to spare in my DB box, so it's not necessarily a deal-breaker for me.
Eric, I see Geotargeting options in the "Host information and Geotargeting" settings section of Openads 2.0.11 (aka phpAdsNew). Granted, I haven't used geotargeting myself, are you implying it's not working in 2.0.11?

I hadn't noticed that geo-targeting was included in this version. It doesn't seem to have all the configuration options of the later version. I'll have to give it a look and see how deep it will target. Thanks for the heads-up. Eric
I recently purchased AdPeeps since OpenAds / phpadsnew has had some issues lately. It offers Geo-Targeting but I have not used it yet.. May give it a shakedown soon. If you haven't heard of it, you might want to check it out. Excellent support as well, but not free.. But, if you are making $$ advertising, well worth the cheap price, IMO.
