My members are saying that even though they read a post 5 times the thing saying theres a new post wont go away. I also experience the same problem after I post in a thread and then it says there is a new post for me even though I made the post. How can this be fixed?

Switch to saving new posts to the database instead of cookies.

general settings > thread/forum read marking type.
