Hi there.

I really need to find a new hosting provider. To say my current provider is worthless would be flattering lol. Anyway, I'm looking for a VPS solution that can handle somewhere between 100-300 forum users logged on at a time. I did a lot of research on hostgator and the reviews seem to be glowing for the most part, but i've also read that they are pretty brutal about shutting people down without warning if too many people are logged on. They only support 25 simultaneous mysql connections. to be honest, i'm not 100% sure what that means in terms of users logged in/using the forum at the same time.

My forum is pretty popular...we have over 5,000 registered members and we get an average of 2,500-3000 "visits" or 216,000 "hits" a day. Bandwidth, however, isn't all that heavy. We only average around 30-40g a month.

Any suggestions? Thanks very much in advance.

VPS is the right idea I guess and there wont be any problems for you. It can easily handle 400-500 users online.

You seem to give a reply to almost every thread in this forum, and often (not saying always, i have also seen some good valuable posts made by you) the post does not make any sense.

"VPS is the right idea I guess"
He is not asking if VPS is the right choice.

"and there wont be any problems for you."
Don't you think this will depend on his choice of host and the package?

"It can easily handle 400-500 users online."
'It'????
What is 'it', a specific VPS package at the host he is asking about (hostgator)?
How many concurrent users a VPS can handle, depends on the configuration of that VPS, a generic reply like you are giving has absolutly no value.

PS Please note that the intention of the hosting forum is to allow members to share their experience with hosts and advice eachother. It is NOT intended as a marketplace/advertising for hosting companies!

Advertising, in post, PM or other means, is not allowed on our site.

300-400 user on a VPS looks a lot to me , I mean you 'll have to contact each provider 1 per 1 to check first , how many VPS cutomers arre hosted per machines at maximum, for exemple I told to eapps how many, they replied 100, so if you count 100*400, I doubt they will host easly 40000users online in same time on a box that does 10$/Mo VPS, you will have to search/contact about that to find quality providers thats does charge each box, or to move on a dedicated is better I think in your case because your site will probably grow. Just my 2cent suggestion.

I think you must not allow to put .com in the nickname, that does some sort of advertising because I saw lots of post of him in hosting talks , he's maybe some sort of new generation bot heh...

Thanks guys. I think VPS will support what i need for now, but can anyone suggest a good (established) provider that they've personally had experience with? meaning....you've run a medium sized or bigger vbulletin forum site on a specific vps and would recommend it? i'm actually starting to lean away from hostgator now that i've done a little more research. Thanks in advance.

100-300 Users online A vps.

While a high end vps would maintain 100 to 200 users ,, 300 is a little much for a vps.
Most vps providers sale top plans with 1 gig of ram, maybe some at 2 gig but not much more,
When you starting using that much ram you really need to be looking at dedicated servers and not VPS boxes.

Also this really depends on what you forums are using resource wise.

Well, I just kept in mind the no.of users he mentioned and suggested what I thought. If this has caused some problems or made it look like self promotion then I apologize for that. But I have never promoted or advertised myself on this forum.

Check for a host with free upgrade paths like servint. If you get on a box and it's paging, you need more.

A $50.00 256mb vps will not help you at all IMO. They will page with two moderately busy forums and or several php driven apps. You do not want to burst. So look at the fixed number of RAM and choose wisely.

thanks for the responses so far.

MySQL Packet Size 150.00 MB

if my site is running very slow even with those numbers (which aren't terrible), wouldn't that indicate that my host is most likely to blame? it's a vps so i really don't think it should be *that* slow. I really believe my provider has just gone to heck.

i guess i'd be open to a dedicated server if i could get a good deal on one. we don't currently run any ads and we don't openly ask for donations, but maybe it's time we changed all that lol. if you all agree that a VPS isn't going to help me, can you point me toward a reasonably-priced ($100-$150 maybe) dedicated provider that would be reliable? thanks again.
