Hi,

What kind of hosting configuration would support that ? Do I need to go dedicated ? Currently, I am on a VPS with these characteristics:

HDD Space: 1 GB
Bandwidth: 32 GB
Yearly cost: $124.70

On 1 machine there can be up to 100 VPSes.

My questions is: what kind of hosting do I need in order to be able to support 10.000 simultaneous connected users !? How about 5000 ? How about 1000 ?

Notes:
1. Pay attention: I am not speaking about 10.000 registered users.
2. The VB board is “clean” - no mods of any kind. (I know that the more mods you have, the heavier is going to be on server resources)

Regards,
Razvan

There are many factors which directly affect your servers capacity as well.

Ideally, you would dedicate a *dedicated server for db processes, and host the remaining data onto a simpler account or across multiple accounts. If you do a search on this forum, you will find multiple threads and modifications to help offload processes and functions over multiple accounts also.

Furthermore, a fast SCSI HD setup and ample memory will help cope with higher loads. Without ignoring the importance of OS optimization, since it has been stated many times, that even the most powerful server will fall to it's knee's without proper optimization.

And what of the CPU? is it 64bit, multi-core etc etc?
64bit OS's have proven to deal with higher memory loads than there 32bit counterparts.

There are a number of other options you could look into to help cope with high loads also, however those mentioned come to mind early on.

Another good idea may be in the planning process as well. In other words, planning for scalability. Depending on your budget and objectives, load balancing and clustering may be the solution to your needs as your project continues to grow.

My advice to you, would be to hit the official vbulletin website www.vbulletin.com and dig around under the *server /hosting forum. There are numerous threads that cover this issue in detail. You will most likely find plenty of helpful information to help you decide what options are viable for you.

it makes little difference whether or not the traffic on your board comes from registered users or guests. The load will still be pretty much the same, depending on exactly what part of your site they're nosing around.

1gIG of HD for 10,000? Is this wise? The bandwidth sounds ok if you turn off several features, but ya 10000

I am not saying that I want to do it with my current setup. I just want to know what kind of hardware I need to support that.

If you really have 10.000 concurrent users, then you would be looking at a high-end multi-server setup probably. I strongly suggest you post in the Server Configuration forum at vbulletin.com.

ya macro is right cause the database it self would need a dedicated server for its self and then the slave server for the database and then the http server
