has anyone ever noticed this? for some reason the amount of posts shown when you go to a users profile and click find all posts by 'user' don't always match the post count shown underneath the username..

I think only like the first(/most recent) couple of hundred are fetched to save too much work on the database. Well thats my guess

Yep. Go to Admin CP > vBulletin Options > Message Searching Options > Maximum Search Results to Return to set the number of results you want returned.
