Thinking of VPS, but not sure what I need on it.

Recent events with my webhost has made me wonder if I should go for a VPS. Problem is, I don't know what exactly I need. How would I know how much RAM is necessary for my website?

Currently, I use up about 30gb per month for bandwidth. AWstats say I get probably around 600 - 750 visitors per day. In fact, with shared hosting with my previous host, I got decent speeds.

I don't know what other info I need to provide, but if someone can give me some insight into VPS hosting, I'd greatly appreciate it.

With only pushing that much traffic I see no reason why a shared hosting account cannot support your website. Not sure why you would need a VPS, specially if you have never ran a server before it would be alot more hassle then good for you.. 700 visitors a day on a VB forum is not alot of resources at all, and a good shared hosting machine could handle that no problem, now if you start getting 700 users + online at all times, then maybe a VPS or even a dedicated would be good, but if its only 700 throughout the day thats a small foot print. Id be glad to assit you in a shared hosting account that would be affordable for you and handle the items you need to handle, then as your site grows we can work on a dedicated server or VPS as you need it. But right now, I really dont see the need for the extra expense unless of course you plan to grow alot bigger very quickly. and if thats the case, Instead of investing in a VPS, you should probably start with a dedicated server, so you will not have to move the site again for a good while..

If your heart is set on a VPS you need to ask yourself a few questions

1. How much do I expect to expand the site and it to grow within 6 months.

2. How much do I know about running a linux/windows (whichever you choose linux being the cheapest) server? Will I need to pay extra to have it managed (could cost between 50-100 a month easy for just the management)

You also have to understand a VPS is on a shared processor, so its basically a shared hosting account with you being allocated say X amount of Ram, X amount of HD space X amount of bandwidth, but your still sharing the same processor and the same bandwidth port.

A vps is surely not cheaper then a shared hosting account, and if budget is a big issue I do recommend you go with a shared account. Finding a web host that will support you is the goal. Their are many out their google "Web Hosting" You will find thousands of links to them. Their are many great websites to find hosts like www.webhostingtalk.com who do reviews on various hosts.

For a VPS your looking at a starting price of about $30-50 depending on who you go with and the quality of service you receive, The bad part about this business is you dont always "get what ya pay for" And you also dont always get the best product for the lowest cost. What I tell people is to research the field, find the person on the highest end, then the lowest end, and go for the middle. Because one guy is obviously charging to much, the other way to little, the guy in the middle seems about right.

there is a guy who posts on this forum from a ukhosting company his name is like eukhosting .com or something he offers VPS and such if you feel as though thats where you need to go, or if you want to see what kinda deal we can work out feel free to email me. (don't really like talking pricing and selling on the board dont want to be a "spammer" if you will)

If you have a growth of your forum in mind and and if you expect good number of users in future then there is no harm in going for a low end VPS plan. You can also opt for a high end shared hosting package and upgrade as per your requirements.

It all depends on your current host and what download speeds are like for your end users.

If you're current shared hosting company isn't complaining about your resource usage then I personally see no reason to upgrade as long as your forum speed is good for the end users.

If you're host is complaining about resource usuage then you may start looking into small VPS'

I personally, used a Shared Host ( one of those 10 dollar for the whole year coupon deals ) when i started my forum, but once we hit around 20-30 users online at all times, the shared hosting went downhill bad. I would get all kinds of crazy Mysql Errors that had me searching the code tryin to figure out why when it turnd out it was just the server was overloaded. I since switched to Knownhost VPS but they offer a execellent Reseller plan to.

You Can get there Reseller Plan for as Low as 5 bucks a month and there VPS as low as 20 a month

What really shines with these guys thou is there execellent Tech Support. They always answer my questions within afew hours and even at 3am a real person actually answers the questions lol.

They have helped me recompile apache afew times due to various problems I had when i was setting up 2 apaches so i could run a SVN server but here's a link to there plans and there very reasonable IMHO.

how much did you pay altogether?

i took the advice of some the guys in here, and continued with shared hosting. the problem was that, my previous host went down daily for a consecutive 7 days. then the latest downtime resulted in me not being able to view my GARS pages. that was it... i found a new host over the weekend, and moved everything immediately. what i like most is having efficient tech support... at least i am not left hanging for hours waiting for a reply.

what i am still unsure about, in the midst of learning about vps, is how much resources is needed for a site like yours - 20 to 30 visitors online at all times (just using it as an example).
