Use templates outside of the forums

I'm pretty comfortable creating hacks within the /forums/ folder. However, if I wanted to start building my site around the forums (so, say I wen to the root www.xyz.com) and wanted to use a php page there in the same style as in the forums folder.

What do I have to do differently? I know I'll have to require once './global.php', but what else? I did a quick test and couldn't get it to "behave" the same way....
