Is there ANY way to display the last poster's avatar and name instead of the statusicon?

Is it unheard of?

Which statusicon are you referring to?

Forumhome statusicons such as forum_new and forum_old

The database would need to be queried for the last poster's avatar; aside from that it would simply be a matter of editing the relevant templates.
