(Un-) Visited thread link highlighting: how's this forum get "unvisited" to be bold?

How does this forum get the unvisited threads to be visually differentiated?

I see that (a) they don't use the style sheets to do it -- why doesn't that work? -- and (b) they are inserting specific bolding code for each separate unvisited thread.

How's that done without putting undue load on the system?
