I'd like to know what all is required in that xml file... i've looked through other style's xml files and they are very long and tedious to just "read" so i was hoping someone might have put together a little how-to perhaps for what some of the more common changes and such are...

really just a starting place...

Don't bother looking at xml files, use control panel instead. In styles manager you can create new styles, change parent styles, edit templates/css/replacements/stylevars, etc...
