Is it possible to remove this completely, and just have the icons on the side show new/old posts? I can't seem to find an option for it anywhere. Thanks!

In 3.6 its in vbulleting options -> Forum Display Options (forumdisplay)

Look for:
Highlight Threads in Which User Has Posted
