How would I go about processing Replacement Variables before Smilies?

I'd like to use replacement variables to allow people to use either case for certain smilies, such as : P or : p

Is there a way to do that?

Just to raise some interest, I thought this might also be a good way of using censorship. With a mod like this you could replace censored words with a smilie.

Any interest in this at all?
