I currently run a car forum that has over a 14,000+ member base, over 1,000,000 posts, and my CPU is maxed out at 100% during peak hours. The server is currently running on a P4 2.4Ghz and so I am thinking a server upgrade is needed.

I have run through most of the server/forum optimization's and it did help a bit, but is definately a temporary fix.

I am thinking of upgrading to:

Woodcrest Series - Intel Woodcrest 5130 Dual Core Woodcrest Processor
250GB SATA Hard Drive 2
2048 MB RAM

Any ideas? Concerns? Comments?

Also I am new to running a server, what all is involved in transfering everything over to the new server? Its still within the same server company and they hold the domain name and IP address. Will they do everything?

Thanks Again!

You may try to get SCSI drives and more ram for better performance on the woodcrest.

I currently use the woodcrest with 73GB SCSI raid 5, and 8GB of ram, lots of vBulletin mods, multiple forums one really large/server intensive and the woodcrest handles it like a dream. even during times of 1500+ guests

I would consider SCSI drives and maybe 4GB if you go that far.

I get 2k+ online and have no issues. Usually when things get up around 3-4k at once it starts taking the performance hits but disabling some modifications can greatly help

Right now we have 195 (89 members and 106 guests) and I would say thats pretty average. We can go upto 200 members and 300 guests at peak hours (on the very extreme end).
