Transferring to the new server Details »» | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
Right now I am following the instructions from the VB manual on how to backup/move to a new server. Section 2 - Transferring to the new server.... Does this mean it is removing it from the old server and moving it to the new server OR does it mean it is COPYING it from the old server to the new server.
Sorry for such a basic question but I don't want to mess anything up. Oh, and the instructions I am referring to are at http://www.vbulletin.com/docs/html/moving_servers Show Your Support

Yes, you are making a copy of the database.
It's basically a backup of your DB. So learn it and remember to do it in the future. Well worth doing. |

Thank you! That is what I was waiting for. I just wanted to be sure it was a COPY. Thank you.
I did successfully (I hope) make the backup..at least it is in the FTP and seems to be a big enough file. Now, once I get off the phone with my new server I should have enough information (FTP login, SSH login, database created) to finish the instructions and the move. WHEW. Can't wait till this is done. But wait, I'll have to do it again for the other forum . LOL. Then I will have to learn even more ok, so I have one more thing before I Get R Dun Step 4 in the instructions says to open the includes/config.php file...... does this mean that at that point my forum will be on the new server, I go to the control panel to find that includes file and change it there? or does it mean that I would FTP that file from the server to my computer, edit it and upload it back to the server? AHHHHH! It is in the FTP. That is where I do it right? Yeah, getting close! |

the config.php file doesn't require a edit if you've setup one server exactly as the previous server. Such as having the database_name the same and the database_user and password on both servers.

Dang, wish I'd of known that before I set up the dbase but thanks, I'll definitely do it on the next move! At any rate, I got it done last night at about 3:30am after much help from liquid web with some problems that cropped up. Dang, I am tired!
Sooooooo........I have another site to move but have to get 2 funky issues figured out before I can do it. 1. I have 2 forums with almost the exact same #members and #posts/Threads but for some reason when I backup, forum 1 is about 1.75GB but forum 2 is 217MB, yes, MB. That's way wrong. I am using the same command line but just changing the pertinent info (dbasename, dbusername and password). 2. Last night during the move, the server co informed me I couldn't get root FTP access via WS_FTP (my current FTP program) They had me install WinSCP. Using that program, THEY are able to log in as root with my password, but I am NOT. We tried uninstalling and reinstalling the program, as well as uninstalling and reinstalling different versions. Nothing worked. They think its something with my computer like a firewall (don't have) or who knows what? They are at a loss. I don't know where else to turn. I have another site to move but need that root access to do the move (it was a Pain in the butt without it last night) BTW I DO have root access to putty/ssh and it works dandy. Wierd!. I know there are lots of knowledgeable people on here so I am hoping someone may have an idea on how I can solve these wierd problems? Any thoughts on what I might check? |

moto, why don't you just follow up my guide on backing up database right here?
https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=106935 You forum isn't that much big so it's the best way to do it via phpMyAdmin. |

I can give that phpmyadmin a try (both hosts have that and ssh) The first forum I moved using ssh commands similar to what you show in your tutorial except during the backup, there was also a -Q command. Also, after backing up but before restoring the dbase, there was a step to move it. They wanted me to use asc then put /path/to/server but it didn't seem to work. My new host suggested I use scp filename root@ipaddress:/home/dbasename and it worked. I will give your phpmyadmin move technique a try on the next move (later in the week) I am somewhat familiar with the ease of exporting/importing there. I have a funny shopping cart that I have to make changes to excel, save in .cvs format and upload to the phpmyadmin. Thanks for the help!

about the 2GB board vs the 217MB board (even though they have about the same number of users/posts/threads.
Somewhere, it was suggested that I check the table sizes. I did that on the new server but the old server uses a different phpmyadmin and I can't find it. It was also suggested that I check to see if one site was saving attachments and the other wasn't. Where would I look? I will be needing to move that 217MB board soon but it just seems WRONG that it is SOOO much smaller than the other site. Any ideas? Thanks! |

You can see if the attachements are in the db or file system in the APC under attachemnts IIRC.
