Using $navbits[lastelement] in Header instead of Navbar

I’ve tried add variables that are found in navbar for example: $navbits[lastelement] and $vboptions[bbtitle] to the header template. The reason is I am trying to change the look of the navigation; however, this approach isn’t working as the variables don’t show up with the values they should(they are empty or at least not showing up). Is there a way I can get these variables to work in the header template?
