How to stop forum spam?
Hi,
On my site, visionscripts.com, weird people began registering lately just to post nonsense posts that are not even necessarily spam. Just a bunch of text that makes no sense whatsoever. Occasionally, though, there would be a couple of links to other sites. I made it so that these posts are sent into moderation queue. Is there anything else I could and/or should do about it? Thanks. |

I ran into the same issue and i had to ban the address's from my server.......they kept trying to reregister under different name's with the same ip addy......
I have noticed this mod too, which is a great idea.... https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthrea...hreadid=134780 |

I have noticed these spammer posts too.I had a couple that were nonsense about having pc problems. No links or brand names were mentioned. Do you think they are using these posts to search out easy to spam forums? Insert some gibberish posts then the keywords will be searched for by bots and replies given to the posts?
Say a bot posts saying they have probs with spyware etc..A few days later another bot will reply with links to their software.. |

If you just ban partial IPs 196. and 83.229. you'll cut nearly all of the mobile phone spam. Almost all of it is from Nigeria, and almost all of it from those IP groups.

image verify cuts out the bots, but there are apparently LOTS of people in India, Nigeria, russia and china who are attempting to make a living from spamming, because we still get hit very hard. Membership approval does help, but I manage 30 forums and it would be a daunting task to moderate all new signups across all 30 of em.

image verify cuts out the bots... not the majority of them now. The other day I saw a post on a webmaster forum that had a link to a bot that could bypass image verification, ip blocks, and almost every other type of security imaginable. The best you can do is install what is necessary and ban what gets through.
