Default I'm not the only one....

Branding is fine, hell I do it all the time but not everything needs to titled with a brand: "Brand's blog"; "Brand's network"; "Brand's addon"..... and have every other word in the hack say your Brand name...... "Brand Message!"

Give it a title according to what it does. Add your copyright etc. to the footer.... But naming every single hack after your brand is old and now there are more and more doing it...

Honestly, we aren't allowed to sell our goods here so why are we allowed to brand our hacks and then when people are hooked we discontinue service and move our brand off site.

Preventive maintaince, nip it in the but before it's a problem....

call me an ass for speaking up but it seems to me people are taking advantage and it needs to stop. if it's a portal, blog, or a hack call it what it is.... leave the branding for the copyright and other items.

Or, just act like cattle and do what everyone else does...

Can certainly understand the sentiment. The amount of blatant self-promotion that goes on here nowadays is really sad.

It really depends on what way it is used.

For example, lets say vBPlaza

Now if you released an add on for vBPlaza called "posts in usercp" what would you call it in the thread title?

Remember that without a good title people don't know what it is about.

Another thing to consider is that not everyone wants to make there products commercial. There are people who want to make good modifications and keep them released here and here only.

I agree with that statement. Some people are out of control. That's like you taking every hack you've made and giving it your brand name, that would be a lot of hacks.... LOL

Why is that a problem? Makes it a lot easier to find if you're searching for it, makes it a lot easier to notice if you're not looking for it.

Overbranding annoys me a lot, but it's not like it doesn't have a good purpose used properly. You get what you pay for...

eek yeah. It'd take too long to change them all anyway

Seriously, I know exactly what you mean. Add ons and that are one thing, but branding just for brandings sake can get a bit OTT sometimes.

What's wrong with branding?

We get free WELL SUPPORTED (usually) hacks.
Coders get name recognition, and more traffic to their site.

Look at Zoints for a prime example. David releases many wonderful hacks FOR FREE for this fine community, and he gets name recognition and an increased bump in traffic at his own website. Honestly, what is wrong with that?

All things in moderation are fine... If you over do it that's called "taking advantage". Don't get me wrong I like and use many branded hacks but there is a line that is being crossed and those who are doing it know it.

Using myself as an example here (and willing to be shot down for doing so), if I took every single one of my releases and branded them as "peterska2 forums and chill out zone" which just so happens to be the name of my site like zoints is the name of DChapman's site, then not only would the titles be extremely long, but due to the sheer amount of releases everyone, including myself, would be fed up seeing them after 30 mins.

Can you imagine having the following in the thread listing?

peterska2 forums and chill out zone - Show No Permission Message If User Cannot View Others Threads In A Forum

or

peterska2 forums and chill out zone - vBonjour - Latest threads via RSS Add On

The length of these is crazily long, and even with a short existing title it would not explain what the modification actually does.

A brand name doesn't explain what a modification is, and doesn't help with anything other than advertising your site. A modification name should be to the point and give a consise description of the modifications function.
