What I would like to do is to prevent some users from seeing part of a post- the way that vbulletin.org treats its unregistered users over viewing code :

it produces a box within the post that is titled "code:" and only registered users can see it.

how do they do that? I want to specifically exclude certain users from seeing financial data and certain advice, and would like to have a tag of "sensitive data" instead of the "code" tag used on this site.

This will do everything aside from the blocking of code, html, etc.. However, you may be able to get someone to help you modify that specific modification (with the author's permission) to fit your specific needs. =D
