Default I Want Moderators To Approve New Users

I'm looking for a hack that would allow moderators to moderate new users -- that is, let them have access to the site, after they've replled to their email confirmation. As far as I know, that's an administrator function only -- but I don't want to make my moderator an administrator with access to the admin control panel.

Here here... I'm looking for a moderate users hack for mods as well.

Why doesn't vBulletin include this natively if other areas like threads, posts and attachments can all be moderated by mods?

that's so funny..I just posted my support of this in another thread...so I'll add my voice here where it might count more...

hey look...we all know IP Bans are a joke right? There's only one real defense against the ever increasing onslaught against forums and that's to go to manual registrations and plug in whatever supports you can find to filter spammers and bogus emails and the like.

I think we know that there are some deep rewrites involved in this but this isn't just a tug-of-war...it's commerce as well. If we can't put our moderators on this task it's just one more among hundreds of tasks Admins have to take on all by themselves...

pleeaase...just fix it folks. It can only make vBulletin significantly better than it already is.

*Bump*

Is this issue just being ignored? Our site has gone to manual registrations and the level of wasted time & energy lost on moderating & finally banning riff-raff has dropped tremendously...but right now Admins are the only ones who can admit new members because of this unnecessary limitation!!! Manual registration works but it's extremely slow if you cannot involve your moderators in the process.

Even Supermoderators do not have this ability which really ought to be available to moderators. Is there some technical complication that makes this a bigger problem than it appears?

Very few sites run with moderated users turned on, and only a few of those would want moderators to do the approving - I don't think this is being activly 'ignored' it just isn't going to get much attention simply because very few people want it.

Well I think very few admins want the burden to approve new members. Especially on large sites. I certainly don't.
But if selected moderators would be able to do this, then this is a whole other story. To have all new members reviewed and approved would very much improve new member problems. So I think that this deserves some thought.

I don't really know that this is true but there could be all kinds of reasons for this. What the majority do today doesn't say anything about what they will be doing a little down the road. The whole point of this way of registering new members is that it is one of the ONLY effective defenses that exists against the increasing onslaught of spammers, trolls, hackers and just general unwanted riff-raff. Most admins would not want to use the moderate users system as it stands since you cannot train moderators to moderate users with it - something that should be a regular part of their jobs. In any case, the option should be made accessible to Admins to make that call. It's a question of proper form here...not so-called popularity. Build the thing correctly and it will become more popular, since it just so happens to address a problem that little else is addressing. As it stands, only Admins with a very high commitment to quality over quantity are prepared to take the hit....a hit they shouldn't even have to be taking from their own management software.

I really don't think this has anything to do with popularity. My best guess is that it's a little complicated to give moderators some access to the admin control panel but limit it everywhere else. Clearly this particular function was not understood for what it really has to offer from the outset and it will probably take some serious redesigning to make it possible now. But this is a security issue we are addressing here. IP Bans don't work...the whole auto-registration system is a bust since any monkey with a few tools can climb back on any time they want to. Manual registration is still not perfect but it's WAY more successful than the next best solution in line. To begin with, it robs potential attackers of the thrill of impulse-attack, a major deterrent in itself. vBulletin has a vested interest in streamlining that system as much as possible, complicated or not. As its competitors come along and start attending to the matter properly, it will begin to lose marketshare over an issue it could have corrected years ago.

I have created a hack to allow Super Moderators to manually approve new members - Moderate User Registrations (ModCP Option)

Enjoy
