Is it possible to have two seperately licensed sites that have a single linked category.

I have two sites with difference niches but they both have a common off topic category. I would like to link these together along with the user info etc. In order to help activity and statistics.

I know their have been a few attempts anyone successful?

It just seems like it shouldnt be that hard...just changing tables all be it alot of them...thats usually where I get confused..
