Problem with a hierarchy I established

For my site, I figured it would be a neat idea to have a hierarchy to determine who can access what in the store. Every time they gained a rank, they also got a secondary usergroup added. Then, I set each store item to react to different usergroups.

My problem was this: when I tried to access the store, the individual item settings didn't work. If a category allows a group access, then everything works just fine. If it DIDN'T allow access, but an item in it did, then nothing worked.
