need access to $navbits[lastelement]

I need to get to the $navbits[lastelement] from within the header template.

The problem I am having is (i think) that the navbits array isnt populated at that point.

Is it possible somehow for me to put a {token} of some sort in place and replace it (after the navbits array exists) for lastelement using a plugin?
