I know that you can create custom profile fields, but is it possible to add options that are NOT displayed in their profile?

I want to store additional information/options and use this for other things I am linking to...

By looking at this modification Glowing and coloured usernames by peterska2 you should be albe to see how the individual used custom profile fields, I belive, in the manner to the info you are seeking.
