With the recent 'changing of the guards' here at vB.org, and the hopefully wrong impression that past position holders will simply disappear, what about if it was dertermined ahead of time when positions would expire?
Possible benefits ... - knowing that position holders only have a limited period to positively affect the site. - helps avoid burn out caused by others assuming position holders are an eternally permanent fixture of the site. - helps prevent stagnation caused by position holders who remain primarily on face value of past work. - gives position holders the opportunity to stay on with the community as a regular member without all the added responsibilities. - provides a chance for other valued members of the community with an opportunity to help share the workload of running a site - etc ... What's your thoughts on this? Mark (Personally interested in hearing opinions as I'm nearing the burnout stage for my site - willing to wear admin/mod hat for one more year, but as of yet, can think of no one who would be willing or able to commit to taking on this voluntary position. - not a good thing) If mods feel this issue is moot for vB.org, please move thread to the Lounge ... thanks |

how about if there was a democratic system with different administration teams and teams register and canvas and then there is a vote every 6 months.

I think that the administration of this site and it's policies are governed by Jelsoft and not the members of this site. This isn't a democracy, get used to it. And I disagree with your idea

I know someone who runs a site like that - the admin stays the same but the staff beneath him are voted on every six months. Saying that, I don't think vb.org would benefit from that kind of hierarchy, I imagine it could take that long just to get settled into a staff position here.

It doesn't necessarily have to be structured in a democratic fashion, or in a method in which a 'board' of directors appoint someone for a fixed period of time.
A person could simply say ... "well ... I'm willing to do it for a year" or whatever. As owner/admin, I remember thinking that what I was embarking on would be a 10 year project, though looking back at things that I've been involved in during my lifetime it seems that things happen in 5 year increments. (started forum in 2000) Thing is ... I never openly told anyone this at my site (yet), and think perhaps it might be a good idea to begin hinting that there will come a time for a replacement. As owner + admin + mod + etc I've been 'wearing too many hats', and letting it be known that some of my duties have an expiration date may help others realize that I'm not immortal, and encourage some to hone their skills for needed positions. ... just chewing the cud so to speak, and interested in hearing others experiences. |
