Hi guys,

My site is totally dead so I need to move to a new host and try and repair what I can. I have a backup from about 2 weeks ago, which I will be wanting to restore along with some additional info from the semi-deleted database on the current server.

I have got a new host lined up, but it is a windows server instead of the linux one that I am used to (not that I ever did anything technical with it though). However, my domain is registered through my host and I cannot control the name servers while it is with them.

So, what I need to know is
  1. Who is a good place to transfer my domain name to so that I can change the nameservers to the new host?
  2. What is the best way to import the database (151MB)?
  3. Anything else that I might need to know about windows servers.
I'm wanting to get the wheels in motion sooner rather than later then I can get the domain transfer started so that I can have as little downtime as possible.

I've not had to do a server move or anything before so I'm a complete n00b to this.

1. Can you not just change the nameservers with your current registrar? You should be able to very easily.

2. SSH, or have your new host restore from the backup. If you get a vps (virtual private server) or dedicated server you can do this yourself as you will have shell access to sql.

3. Don't go Windows...go Linux server!!!!!!! seriously

I can't change the nameservers with my current registrar. I asked them about it and they flat down said no. It is because the registrar is also the host so it ties you into their hosting. I'm looking at godaddy. They seem to have what I need relating to name server access and cheap too.

Just to stress as I have had PM's and IM's about hosts: I do not require a host. I have got this sorted already.

I use between 1.5GB and 4GB BW a month, so I have gone with one that meets my requirements and gives me room to grow too.

Oops, sorry for messaging you info about a host Peterska2. I haven't had much experience with just nameservers so I can't be of help there.

Good luck though.

I just registered a new domain with them. I guess I didn't read their TOS. What did I miss?
