Ajax Rating?

Well I have a rating system on my site and was wondering how to do this Like in this picture:

I mean how does this save it's an image!

It's probably 5 images, each images passes different parameter via ajax.
Other possibility is that it's an image map, and coordinates are passed as parameter.
