Query from Custom Profile Field?

I'm curious if there's any way of running a DB query or php script when someone enters information into a custom profile field. If so, how would you do it?

*edit* I just thought, it could be run as a cron job in scheduled tasks...but I'm a complete noob to php and sql (well, I can figure SOME things out...).

Would anyone be willing to help direct me?

I'm confused what you'd do with this... But ran as a cron would be possible, assuming your host supports it, if it does not I created a script called "virtcron.php" that will attempt to act as a cronjob.

If you could tell me what you want it to do, using some sample information as an example, (assuming you have the cron supported on your server as well), I may be able to help.

When I said cron, I meant a scheduled task, tho I could run a cron job with my server...

What I'm attempting to do is have a custom profile field that a user can either check or add an email address to in order to add them to the list of people who recieve email notifications of every post in a specific category or forum.

Poeple have requested a mod something like this before, which is why I didn't post specifics initially.

So what I would like the scheduled task to to (or if it can be done as an sql query when submitting a change to that user profile) is to check to see which users have selected this option and then add their email address to the list.

The reason I'd like to do this is that I'm attempting to port a group of people that are used to Yahoo Groups and like having every post sent to their email accounts.

If there's a better way of doing this I'd like to know...
