Post order
I can't really believe vB doesn't have this in the standard options, so maybe I am missing it...
I want threads for all users (and I don't want them to have an option to change it) in one forum to be displayed in the order of the first post in the thread. That is, new replies won't bump a thread to the top of the order. Similar to what SitePoint does in this forum: http://www.sitepoint.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=56 (though my forum uses the latest version of vB) Any ideas? I searched the forums but all I found was this thread and the question was ultimately never answered. Thanks! |

So you are looking fo r away to keep dead topics dead?

Well, it's more a way to make sure people can't bump topics and continually bury new ones.

That's this hack correct? I wonder if you can set the no bumping to 0 days... otherwise it won't really accomplish what I am after.
Without saying exactly what I am after, this example works approximately the same: Say I run a site where people can post classified-ad type posts. I'd like them to stay in the order they were posted so that each post gets as close to equal exposure as possible. Anyway, I'll check out this hack. Thanks for the recommendation. (Though I don't really want to make it more difficult for people to make replies, I just don't want them to move threads back up to the top of the thread listing... so not sure if this bit about having to check a box to make your reply will quite what I am looking for.) |

Yeah, same hack, sorry I posted a screenshot and not the actual hack link.
Well just for the sake of the discussion, here's another "anti-bumping" hack: https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?p=915651 That one auto-expires (ie: closes) a thread after a pre-determined period of inactivity. In reading your last post though I see that doesn't accomplish what you want. The "classified ad" example is a good one. You want their post order to be preserved, so replies don't actually "bump" the thread. Makes perfect sense, in fact, that should be a standard option for some forums. I could see it coming in handy or even being necessary for some applications. Just haven't seen anything like it for vB (yet.) |

I'll ask Tom (webmaster at SitePoint.com) how complicated it was for him to hack that in vB 3.03. Maybe I'll make a suggestion over at vB.com for it as a feature as well.
Thanks for the help! |

Thanks! I wonder how I missed that.... I searched for "post order" "sort order" "thread order" etc... oh well.
Thanks again. |
