When trying to upgrade to the newest version I get the following error

Did you stop the instal script at one point and then re-start it? It can't add the field because it exists.

What you should do is manually delete the field "canview" from the table "subscribethread" from the database. You should have a phpmyadmin link somewhere in your server control panel.
