Default XP Math Forums

Hi everyone,

Please take a moment to review my forum at

http://www.xpmath.com/forums/

On another note, how can I get more users to join? :disappointed:

I would merge all of the off topic forums into one until business really takes off.

One question I have is what level of math do you intend to deal with? elementary? high school? college? I would refine that target audience and then politely promote the site to teachers at the appropriate level.

The problem of the day is a great idea. Make sure that you post one daily though. A sure site killer is to have a daily feature that isn't kept up to date. It makes a site look unprofessional and inconsistant. If you can't do it daily, rename it featured problems, etc. and update it when possible.

I think you are losing some opportunities with your style. Use more numbers and math symbols in the style. Play with the theme a bit.

Kill the arcade, chat, etc. unless it is solely math games and discussion. If you want teachers and students, you have to make it a school-friendly site. That means no off-topic stuff or goof-off stuff if you want teachers sending kids there for assignments, extra credit, etc. I have a lot of history and geography quizzes but can't promote them to schools and teachers because of my goof-off content level.

How do you plan to finance the site? Ad banners aren't likely to be effective for younger users. But, you may be able to get sponsorships from educational orgs if you really refine your concept and bulk up your content.

(I guess you can tell I'm a math major and into your topic I hope this takes off for you.)

You should center the forum/homepage within the browser.

I agree with the games. I noticed that curveball, copter, and tetris are the most played games. That might not fly well if this site is to be school friendly

Overall good job

However, I'm not sure who your target audience is. (eg. teachers, elementary, intermediate, high school students) I'm guessing it's your students; but, parents and visitors to site would be confused.

The main page looks great. HUGE icons, BIG fonts, white-space throughout the page makes it easy to scan. Use the same design principles throughout the site.

Replace the ABOUT page with something about the site. I don't think your visitors would be interested in past designs. I was actually disappointed when I seen this page. Also, the majority of your visitors most likely will not understand what valid XHTML 1.1, CSS and Javascript is - remove it.

The forum and arcade section really looks out of place. You need to carry over part of the design that you use elsewhere into these sections. eg. colors, text size, icons, etc

Besides repeating what others have said, I would change the forums title.

Instead of "XP Math Forums, Mr. Hui's Math Class Website Technology Class Website" and making it awfully reptitive, what about something like "XP Math Forums: Mr. Hui's Math/Technology Class Website."

That way you shorten the title, less repetitive, and to the point.

Thanks all for your comments. I've executed most of your suggestions.

Do you know of any vBulletin skin that will fit my design? Or should I just customize it myself?

I would just customize it yourself. The one you have now is a good jumping off point.
