Gender in the non-3.5 versions?

I finally worked out how to add gender as a user profile field in 3.5 (astonished that it isn't already there as an option, seems so obvious) but now, because I'm helping with a Subdreamer plugin that depends on gender, I need to find out if creating user profile fields is as simple in all the other versions stretching back to vb 2.

Anyone know?
