what would i put in a template to make a logged in user's, userid# show
up somewhere on the screen?

Put it somewhere in your postbit(_legacy) template.

Inside post (message) would be a bit more difficult, but for the rest the same answer.

Unless he wants the userid of the person who posted, which would be $post[userid] (inside postbits only)
