How many forums are you allowed?
I want to start another board but I'm not sure if this means I have to purchase it again? Thanks

Unlimited Forums/Board, 1 license/Board

Hmm ... so let me rephrase that:
You are allowed to have an "unlimited" (more than approx. 1.500-2.000 forums won't work) amount of forums per board. However, you will need 1 license per board. See http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=103150 |

Andreas or anybody that knows ,
I need to create thousands of forums on one board with one domain . I want to do something like this Skidmore College Skidmore needed an automatic way of creating discussion groups for each of Skidmore's 800+ courses. They are pre-populated with instructors and enrolled students, and updated nightly. These forum/categories are automatically available to faculty without the need to contact IT to have them created. Students and faculty only see the course categories in which they are enrolled. Read the full story. I have more courses plus I need sub forums under each. I can easily exceed 2000 forums . What causes the unlimited forum limitation .Is it Php or Mysql or is it the hardware .Is there anyway to get around this? If I buy more Licenses can I install them on the same server and somehow use the same user database for all my installations? I want to have just one log in . Thanks |

In theory it is unlimited, but in real life you will hit some limitations once you go over 1/2000 forums (there are some numbers mentioned at vb.com, but there is no fixed limit).
You would get into trouble because the forum list with all the forum descriptions (hence short descriptions can handle more forums) in the datastore. Also you will hit some memory limits pretty fast if all this data is loaded into memory for each session. To get an offocial answer, i suggest you also ask at vb.com. |

Thanks Marco,
I already asked at VB.Com and they said after about 1500 one would run into trouble so I am trying to figure out how to get past this limitation. I dont mind paying for more licenses but I want a way to have one login on one domain . So is there a way to have multiple/Lisense installations that share one user database ? So that users will logon only once . Would it matter if I create my own forum index like this so as to prevent the forum list from loading all the time ? Does this have anything to do with mysql ? Would it matter is the Database was Oracle { I know we cant use Oracle but I just want to uderstand this better} Thanks |

It is not a license issue. Your license will allow unlimited forums on your board.
The problem is that to improve performance, the full list of all forums (among other things), their descriptions and other settings, is loaded into memory on each pageload. These memory structures simply get too big. Not easy to make that change since all vB scripts rely on this information being available. Changing the looks of your forum index would make no difference. |

Ok Marco,
I think the better opton for me would be to have multiple licenses/forums on the same server with one database or even multiple databases but with a single shared user database so that all the users can register just once . I saw somewhere that you are trying to create a commercial hack to let multiple forums share one userdatabase . When will you be done and can you give anymore info about it. Thanks |
