So far, I have only been able to find the smilies in quick reply hack that opens a new window for the smilies. Does anybody know how they did it in Off Topic forums, where a little drop down menu appears like in advanced?

Don't worry, it's just one little file edit, that enables smiley fetching in showthread...
But after installing it, you get exactly the same smiley dropdown that you have in advanced editor
