The higher you set GZIP, the more the server load, so you should set it to 1, as any higher would increase the server load and provide only minimally more compression. It is used to save bandwidth, not server load.
If 1.0 is 100% usage of one CPU, then how can normal servers spike into the hundreds? A bunch of stuff in a processing queue?
