The thing is a lot of people (stupidly) use the same passwords for lots of things so if your user had their AIM name listed in their profile the chances are their password was the same. If passwords were just left there for the admin to see then you would get a lot of security problems. Just like on windows anything passworded is encrypted. This is to stop the security risk
