Nothing at all wrong with 5.. It's just a different animal as it was created based on today's modern standards.. 4 is the end of what started with vb2 pretty much.

While there is much more you can add to 4 via mods and such, 5 is much faster and better coded for the modern web. So it's a bit of a trade off. The biggest gripe with 5 is that none of the mods are even close to compatible and would have to be completely re-written.

It caused a lot of stink when it first came out, but for those of us that stay up to date with the direction of web coding we understand the reason for the overhaul. I have no issue with 5 but due to the popularity of 4 it's what I create all my styles for still.

vBulletin 5 is a great standard forum! If you don't want to customize it heavily then it will work just fine for your discussion needs .

Just keep in mind that:
- You can't heavily modify vBulletin 5 (if on the Cloud then barely at all other than style) yet can customize your style and do some rather basic yet nice things with it.
- If you want to heavily style and modify a site to well... do your "bidding" then you should go with vBulletin 3 or 4, the latter being very solid for a while now with extensive styles and modifications available here on the ORG and many third-party scripts available elsewhere.
- Yes! You can run vBulletin 3 or 4 under your vBulletin 5 license. The only license available for purchase currently is a 5, vBulletin allows you to run either of the previous versions under that license just not all at once respectively.

I've edited your post and removed the "fake" forum signature. If not for the direct comment regarding vBulletin 4/5 and such I would have spam banned you sir, please refrain from including fake signatures.

Also, you're showing as unlicensed .

VB5 HAD a lot of bugs/problems. They have pretty much squashed the major bugs and are working more on polishing the feature set. Version 5.1.9 is solid and I would recommend to anyone wanting to setup a forum who doesn't wish to modify much from out of the box other than styles. There are quite a few custom styles available at reasonable cost from a few different developers that are supported and maintained.

Modifying VB5 is different than VB3-4, but is not impossible. I've done several mods on my site with zero issues.

The reasons (as far as I've experienced) that people use vB over most forum softwares is because of the resources available to it. The mods and what not available for the vB3 and vB4 versions are pretty much uncontested. As is is the ease of access with the template system and plugin system.

Yes, vB5 (assuming you're not on the cloud) can be customized fairly extensively. I've done mods myself for clients. It's quite stiff and not as simple though, it's a much more tedious task. However, it is possible.

All in all I still prefer vB4 over vB5. I don't really touch vB5 much unless a client needs me to. I'm hoping for better things in the future. I remember being on the vB4 Beta team and how hands on (to an extent) they were with developers. I'm sure I and other devs wouldn't mind helping them on a new version. What's missing most here is an attention to detail. They're trying to do so much with vB5 (now vB5 connect, vB5 cloud, etc) that they're forgetting what they were at their core, which was a software company that did one thing really well (forums). I get it, a CMS can and should go hand in hand. I just don't think these different versions of vB5 and different price models should have been looked at prior to perfecting their existing CMS and different functionalities.

A good attention to detail and perfecting what is being done now before proceeding further will go along way. That includes but is not limited to: CMS, design, functionality and last but certainly not least: a more flexible means for 3rd party development.

No one gets wordpress, yet alone any software, to use it in its raw format.

Mods can be done yes however compared to vB3/vB4 they're not as cost effective for our clients when it comes to vB5 which is why we need the full system back as it was prior in my opinion. This is also why many simply don't bother with porting their mods over, in some situations it feels like I'm Pink Floyd and the only way to get something done is by taking down the wall. It eventually came down, hopefully this one will too, even if it takes another few years for someone to wake up #CommunismSucks .
