I know that there are several hacks around for glowing user names but I could not find one that fitted my requirments which was all users had no glow unless selected.
Here is a very quick and easy to install hack that I knocked up this morning. Tested on vBulletin 2.3.0.
To install, this requires one file and one template edit, along with a custom profile field.
To use, users simply set the colour they require in their profile.
Please click "Install" if you use this.

I installed it but nothing happens after I put the number in. I put in 000000 for black and nothing changed. Also how do I know what field # it is? Thanks

Go into the Control Panel and move the cursor over edit on the group you have selected. In the status bar on IE at the end of the URL it should show...
action=edit&usergroupid=7
...obviously the trailing number could be diffierent for you, but that is the number you need.
great hack. how can i let the usernames in the "Users Online" glow also?!
Thanks for the comments. Making the online users was beyond the scope of this small hack as there are many other hacks that do that and the chances of conflicting with them would be high.
Saying this, if anyone wants to make an addon or enhance this, they are welcome to use this as a base.
I do have a problem with one user who sees everything distorted where the name is glowing. The only thing I've been able to find is that she's on a Macintosh. Is it possible it's the problem and if so is there a way around this?
It does it in all the style sets I have.
Would it help if I looked at writing a piece of code that excluded that user from this?
This is a brower issue and I doubt any changes to the code would actually fix this for one user so perhaps the best issue is to remove them from viewing it?

If it wouldn't be too much trouble that would be great. She's one of my moderators and it's hard because if she doesn't recofnize the member by his/her avatar she has to click in the profile to see who it is. Thanks for your help!

Okay...
...in forums/admin/functions.php find...
PHP Code:
//GLOW NAME
if (trim($post[fieldXXXXX])!="") {
...and replace with...
PHP Code:
//GLOW NAME
if (trim($post[fieldXXXXX])!="" and $bbuserinfo[userid] <> YYYYY) {
...with YYYYY = the id number of this moderator.
They will not see any "Glow" names, while everyone else will. Please let me know if it works ok for you, it did on my test board.
Ok I'll change it and get back to you once the person having trouble comes online next.
Also, do you know if anyone has had trouble getting the colour codes displaying the right colour? I've had a couple of people tell me they tried a certain colour code and gave them something else. For example the colour "teal" with this code: #008080 gives a kind of blue instead of the kind of green it's supposed to give.
I've tried this code in the glow text hack I have for the posts and it works fine. It's no big deal, I gave him a lighter teal that works but just wondering if it's a problem others had or just me. I don't recall seeing it in this thread.
Yeah, quite easy to adapt. Install the hack excatly as shown in the instructions, but set the "Field Editable" to "No" for the new profile field.
That way only Admin's or Mod's can view that field. Rather then put your colour "CC00FF" in the code, put it in the new profile field via the Admin CP.
This will allow the board Admin to control who has what colours be it just themselves, or a standard user if required. The colour not being hard coded allows for a quick change if required as well.
Hrm, never even thought of that. Thanks for the assistance.
BTW, I should mention that I've been looking for a hack like this for awhile. We had something like this on our old system, but lost it when we upgraded. I'm very glad to have it back!
