ProfitBite combines accounts from the main affiliate networks and at present supports over 3000 merchants from 6 individual networks, so any external link could be a potential revenue stream!
Example:

Lets say someone posts a link to Play.com on your forum, recommending a new product. This script will rewrite it so if any one who clicks that link and goes on to purchase something from play.com you will be entitled to some commission.

Check out http://www.profitbite.com for more information.

Development of this product is ongoing and future versions will introduce new features such as:
  • Server-side rewriting of links
  • Redirects via your own domain
  • API integration
  • Full control of your ProfitBite control panel from within vBulletin (once the API is released)

Feedback is welcome and would be much appreciated, so if you start using this product and feel there?s something lacking, please leave your feedback here.

You can find the installation instructions within the README.txt file.

Is that email sent from vB.org? If so, please sent me the full mail (including headers) in a PM.

Otherwise, vB.org has nothing to do with these emails, and they probably got your email address from some other place.

The author of this modification has cleared this up to us. Those emails are not sent from vB.org, and the only way it is related to vB.org is that in their old text of the email they provided a link to this modification on vB.org.

We are not a party in this communication, so complaining here on vB.org would not serve any purpose. But the author has updated the test in the email to exclude the link to vB.org. If you have any more questions regarding these emails, i suggest you contact the sender directly.

So you condone the sending of email spam so long as it promotes vbulletin.org?

As above, it's clear that the emails did not come from vbulletin.org, but it sets a dangerous precedent to allow email spamming which directly promotes vbulletin.org mods.

In the meantime, I've received the updated spam email pushing this mod, and indeed it does not include the vbulletin.org link - but I think it's very bad show on the part of vbulletin.org that you are seen to support such behaviour.

It does not matter whether vBulletin condones the sending of email spam or not, they cannot stop the guy, but they can prevent him from posting links to vb.org... as they have done. If he continued they could graveyard his mod.

I see no precedent and obviously they cannot control it, so suggestion they support it is silly.

I am not sure why you are whining here... report it to your ISP and have their IP address blocked. Tell them to remove you. I am sure they will oblige.
