anything you are passionate about.

if you can't think of anything, you shouldn't create a forum

It sounds like you have a great idea already to start the site with. Don't worry about not appointing admins or mods ahead of time. It's always better to choose your staff from within the membership body. Just watch and you'll see who the most enthusiastic members are who are natural leaders, helpers, coaches, communicators. Those folks begin doing the job for you without realizing they're doing it. The members know them, have come to respect them, and already begin to follow their lead before they get "promoted" so there's usually much less friction. (I always look for 3 things -- expertise, teaching ability, and a sense of humor.)

Same goes for the direction you take with your community ... just relax, enjoy the exchange between people, and let the group evolve naturally. You don't need to pin everything down from the start and then try to force everything to go exactly the way you envisioned it on Day 1. Successful communities grow from the strengths found within the group dynamic, so keep a light touch on the reigns.

Have fun and enjoy yourself

You could always make an anime forum since there aren't any huge ones yet.

Well, the largest forum on the Internet is about anim?. So apart from that, no.

http://www.gaiaonline.com/forum/index.php

But it's really pretty nasty, could do with a pro and some decent software behind it.

I honestly do think a DIY forum is an excellent idea. It's a subject that lends itself so well to the exchange of expertise.

Im leaning towards it... but im not certain how to get it setup.

I mean what I'm aiming for isn't like the kind of DIY site you would look for to find information on stuff like DIY plumbing, or electrical..

More of like a gadgets type of place.... I build alot of weird stuff, sometimes I see a commcerical product that could be built at home for a fraction of the cost etc.

When i set it up, do i want to get it fully setup right away, as in SEO, Ads etc?

Or would it be best to just get a forum going, then add stuff like SEO and Ads as it grows?

I dont want to lose what small member base i may have gained, because i put ads or something on my site.

I'm in the same boat. I recently sold several of my forums but the sale did not include my vB licenses so I have several open licenses and I'm looking for new forum ideas to start.
