Hi guys,

My site is totally dead so I need to move to a new host and try and repair what I can. I have a backup from about 2 weeks ago, which I will be wanting to restore along with some additional info from the semi-deleted database on the current server.

I have got a new host lined up, but it is a windows server instead of the linux one that I am used to (not that I ever did anything technical with it though). However, my domain is registered through my host and I cannot control the name servers while it is with them.

So, what I need to know is
  1. Who is a good place to transfer my domain name to so that I can change the nameservers to the new host?
  2. What is the best way to import the database (151MB)?
  3. Anything else that I might need to know about windows servers.
I'm wanting to get the wheels in motion sooner rather than later then I can get the domain transfer started so that I can have as little downtime as possible.

I've not had to do a server move or anything before so I'm a complete n00b to this.

GoDaddy is a proven company. They've been around for a while. Establishing a domain through them is a good move. We use them too. I was thinking about going to them for hosting purposes too. Maybe at some point down the road.

hosting@godaddy.com == very very very bad;

name cheap is a good place to get you name very cheap and they offer whois gaurd for free here is the link

Can you give any good reasons besides the usual "lol, omfgz windows sux!!1!" ?

I have Linux and Windows 2003 servers, both are solid and fast.

I went with godaddy because they were cheap and I didn't know about this one. I'll have to check it out.
