vbProArcade Beta 2
1/5/03: Beta 2 released 9/12/02: Beta 1.03 zip updated to include safe mode fix 9/3/02: Beta 1.03 released -- small bug fixes, see below 9/1/02: Beta 1 of vbProArcade has been posted. Please see below for installation instructions. Background Information vbProArcade is a fully-customizable Flash arcade add-on for vBulletin, complete with game-by-game scoreboards, forum integration, a "champions" system, statistics, and more. This is an extensive hack that is still in BETA form, and I don't recommend installing it if you are not willing to work through potential issues and future updates/upgrades! I am working on making the installation instructions as easy as possible, but it will probably be some time before it is perfect. Watch this post for updates as they happen, and check out screenshots from the list below. If you would like to see the hack in action, you may visit my Shadows of Namek forums. You will need to register to play, but you can view the scoreboards and the arcade itself as a guest. Credits This hack materialized thanks to work and help from a number of people and forums. Here they are:
So far, there are FIVE GAMES that work correctly with this hack. They are: Breakout Pacman Snake Space Invaders Tetris All five .SWF files are included in the release archive. There is now a Flash Games Development Thread for the purpose of modifying existing games to work with vbProArcade, or for creating new games to be compatible with vbProArcade. If you have a game that you wish to see modified but don't know how, post the .FLA source in that thread and hopefully somebody can assist you. Installation Instructions Download the file attached to this post, unzip it and familiarize yourself with the contents BEFORE doing anything. There are TWO separate files worth reading, the Documentation and the Installation Instructions. I recommend that you read both BEFORE doing anything else. Once you have done this, the instructions to be followed are contained in vbproarcade-install.txt. Follow them as precisely as possible. If you encounter an error somewhere, it is likely that you missed a step or made a small error. Please double-check your work BEFORE posting about problems here. And it cannot be said enough: read that file before you do anything, and if you are unsure of something, please post your question(s) before attempting to install the hack. Problems and Fixes/Workarounds (as of 1/5)
Here is the list of stuff that I know does not work. I will be working towards correcting these bugs BEFORE adding new features for the next release.
Here is the list of posts from this thread that contain screen shots for the new version. Check them out!
This is the stuff that is in progress for future release:

The images are stored in the database as binary MEDUIMBLOB columns.
Thus if your query with the binary string is corrupted, so will your image be. Like Talisman said, the fix is to edit your games images in the AdminCP. and then add any new games via the AdminCP. The HTML is EXACTLY the same for all of them. |

What do you mean when you say edit your games images in the AdminCP? Like try and re-upload them? If thats what you mean it doesn't work I have tried it numerous times. I have even tried to manually upload the image into the db and it STILL doesn't work.
It would be nice for it to just look for the .gif associated with the game name or even number so we didn't have to worry about the uploads not working. It would also probably be better security as well. |

It's a weird hack, bharvey. The normal stuff we're used to don't work with this, for some reason. Guess it's because it's still a beta. I imagine futureal will tidy things up in time.
I had the same problems you guys are describing. So I searched the thread and found little scattered comments in here that serve as work-arounds. But they're not easy to find and they're not very thoroughly described. Sounds more like those who posted knew what was going on at the time, but it's not so clear to the rest of us. (At least it made little sense to me, at first.) There are two things you need to look at: 1. If your situation is like mine..... any time you upload the graphic files to your database yourself, it won't work. Same thing if you run the queries, either using a script or doing it manually. The big globs of gobbledygook (great big columns of binary blob things) in the database come out differently than they do if you upload them using the "add game" or "modify games" options in the ACP. 2. The other thing to check if this isn't working right is the path provided by the hack in the ACP. It's not correct..... you have to delete the first slash. (This is mentioned in passing early on in this thread.) Sounds like these might be the reasons your graphics aren't getting in there. You can't enter them by query or manually yourself ...... and the bad path in the ACP prevents you from the uploading them the way this hack wants you to do it. Look at the screenshot I took of this and you'll see what I mean. Hope that works for you. |

Futureal, maybe you could edit your first post to explain this and make a few minor corrections to the txt file? |

Go into the admin CP, choose edit game....then scroll to the game you wanna edit. You'll see the corrupted image, then below that there is a radio button that says something like delete current image? you answer yes, then below that there is a file browser. Select the image file you want to use, hit submit, and it stores it CORRECTLY in the database using the proper BLOB format. As far as security goes, what's more secure? a file, or a datastream protected via MD5 encryption and pass within MySQL... Personally, I find that uploading the image into the database is alot easier than having to make sure that my uploads directory is properly CHMODed and that the paths are correct, etc.etc....just put the binary in the database, then pull when needed. |

He he.... we'll just blame it all on futureal. He spent all that time making it possible for us to upload these things from the ACP, and he damn well intends for us to use it.
Whether we want to or not ...... lol. |

Doesn't work with the / in front of games or not in front. Also Database, Files, who cares I like solutions that work for everybody. And this seems to be a common issue for some dumb reason. |
