It would be cool and not that hard to just make it so when a user uploads a profile picure it get run through the profile picture system and the avatar system (plus you remove the upload avatar template so people can no longer upload via avatar).
So what you want is the avatar options removing, and profile pics as avatars (would need to have a max dimension to show in the postbit if profile pic dimensions larger than about 100x100)?
Let me know if I'm right, and I'll see about it for you.
Yep I want to remove the option of adding an avatar and just use the avatar system to store the smaller version of the profile pics .
That way I dont get 1,000 PM's asking "Hey how do you add the little pics next to the posts" and i think two picture systems is a bit much.

no luck as yet. had to stop working on it to finish some other outstanding jobs. the postbit doesn't seem to parse the profilepic url so I'm gonna have to get out the php files and book to see what i can come up with.
