New Avatar/Profile Picture overwrites last one

I have found that when a user changes their avatar or profile picture, the new image is uploaded on top of the old image leaving the old image to lie redundant wasting space on the server.

Could the code be modified to that when a user changes their avatar or profile picture, it overwrites the last one?
